We’re delighted to welcome naturalist Dan Puplett to Falkland Estate for a 3-day Bird Language and Nature Awareness course. Dan has had a passion for the natural world from an early age, having been involved with a wide range of conservation and environmental education projects and worked for Trees for Life for over 11 years. His many roles at TFL included leading over 80 residential Rewilding Weeks in the Highlands, training Rewilding Week leaders and co-ordinating research and monitoring.
For over 40 years Dan has studied a variety of naturalist skills. He is one of a few people in Europe to achieve a Professional (100%) certificate in Track & Sign under the CyberTracker Conservation system (the international standard for evaluating wildlife trackers in the field).
Reading ‘bird language’ is the ancient art of interpreting bird calls and behaviour and is closely related to tracking. Birds are alert to the things they need in their environment to to survive. We will discover how paying attention to bird vocalisations, such as alarm calls, can help us to see more wildlife and become much more aware of what is happening in the wider landscape. It gives us a powerful insight into the secret lives of birds and other animals, helping us develop understanding and empathy ad a stronger connection to the wild world. Using a range of exercises, games, mapping techniques and other activities, you will learn how to:
- Recognise different types of bird call
- Interpret bird behaviour
- Spot wildlife such as sparrowhawks and tawny owls using bird language
- Experience the value of the ‘sit spot’ for wildlife observation
- Sharpen your senses and nature observation skills
- Cultivate mindfulness in nature
- Improve stealth, camouflage and awareness skills
- Use mapping and journaling as naturalist tools
- Develop quiet, alert attention
- Explore bird language as an aspect of wildlife tracking
- Deepen nature connection through bird language
