This month we’re featuring work by local artist Hazel McLeod in our gallery. Hazel was born in 1979 and lives in Newburgh. She takes inspiration from her surroundings and works in clay and on canvas.

About Hazel McLeod –

“Since graduating from Art College I have always kept up my studio practice. I have rented studio space in Out Of The Blue studios, Leith Edinburgh, Resipole studios in Ardnamurachan and I now currently have a dedicated painting studio in my home and a pottery studio in my garden in Newburgh, Fife. Being based in Newburgh my work is influenced by Fifes rolling landscapes, the stoic river Tay and the picturesque Newburgh waterfront. The heart of my practice lies in the reimagining of these sites,
on canvas and with clay, translating natures poetry into a language of oil paint and glaze.

As an outdoor enthusiast, my experiences from hiking, camping, and paddle boarding are my muses. The vibrant palette of my work, filled with rich blues, greens, turquoise, contrasted with bright hues of pinks and oranges, mirror the vivid saturated world I perceive during my escapades. I enjoy the painterly nature that comes across in my work and enjoy my approach being quite spontaneous and fluid. The sketches from my sketchbooks and photographs from my outings serve as starting points, but I want my work to transcend their literal origins. I aim to evoke the spirit of these places and to make the familiar mysterious.”
