This is a 2 day experience (ticket includes camping pitch, lunch and dinner plus evening talks and activities)

Teaching will be 9.30 to 5 both days with a 1 hour break for lunch.

We shape the earth and the earth shapes us – an introduction to Earth Building for anyone wanting to experience and develop creativity with earth. A practical workshop comprising taster sessions in various earth building techniques allowing us to see and feel the change in our hands and explore some big themes about sustainability and well being.

Exploring:

  • How to build with earth in structures and finishes
  • How to create with earth in surfaces and objects
  • How to use earth as a teaching material for sustainability

DAY ONE

  • How earth materials can be transformed into building materials
  • Hands on science demonstrations – how earth buildings work
  • Soil sourcing and testing – using and adapting local materials
  • break for lunch
  • Earth and fibre in structures – Mudwalling (cob)
  • Making sample mixes and blocks
  • Nature as teacher – creativity using soil and plants

DAY TWO

  • Earth and fibre in wooden frames – daub and light earth
  • Earth and fibre for thermal comfort – mass and insulation
  • Making sample mixes and panels
  • break for lunch
  • Earth as a surface finish – plaster and texture
  • Making sample mixes and panels
  • Nature as teacher – transforming people and communities as well as materials

Description

As part of a wider immersive build-experience week, this 2-day course can be booked on its own or alongside Building Bridges – a turf based approach to natural building.  An practical and expressive 2-day immersive build experience to develop creativity with earth. Comprising taster sessions in various earth building techniques allowing us to see and feel the change in our hands and explore some big themes about sustainability and well being.

Covid – Most of the event will take place outdoors in a large field with limited numbers. However please bring your own masks for when you need them, we will provide handwashing stations and limit groups to enable social distancing. In the event of rising case numbers and public health advice, we may need to postpone the event. We also encourage you to take a lateral flow test, if you can do so
